Since 2014, Grafana Labs has transformed how organizations visualize and understand their data. “Grafana's AI evolution progressed in stages. Where we started with traditional methods to forecast and detect outliers, we rapidly moved into the GenAI space to provide auto-summaries for incidents or explain flame graphs," said Maurice Rochau, Senior Product Manager at Grafana Labs. "These tasks were mostly single prompt, single action, single outcome." The team recognized that observability challenges required more sophisticated solutions that could combine context with prompts, execute multiple actions, and drive various outcomes simultaneously.

Selecting Claude for technical complexity and accessibility

When building their Grafana Assistant, the team needed AI models that could handle observability's technical complexity while remaining accessible across all skill levels. They chose Claude Sonnet 3.7, soon to be 4, and Claude Haiku 3 as the main models powering their multi-agent system.

"We use Claude Sonnet 3.7 and Claude Haiku 3 as main models for our Grafana Assistant," Rochau explained. "With Claude Sonnet 3.7, we tackle more technically complex tasks while Haiku 3 handles simpler summarization tasks."

Claude consistently demonstrated superior performance handling observability data's nuanced requirements—from understanding database queries to generating accurate visualizations. The model family approach proved particularly valuable, allowing Grafana to optimize for both deep technical analysis and quick responses based on specific use cases.

Implementation was straightforward thanks to comprehensive documentation and Grafana's open-source nature. "Integration with Claude is easy due to the available docs and best practices," Rochau noted. As an open-source company with extensive public documentation, community contributions, and openly available code, Grafana benefits from Claude's ability to understand their ecosystem deeply. This ease allowed Grafana to move quickly from concept to working prototype.

How Claude enables intelligent observability workflows

Grafana's AI assistant operates directly within the interface as a sidebar, providing contextual help wherever users work. The assistant combines Claude's capabilities with Grafana-specific best practices and deep observability workflow understanding.

The multi-agent system handles sophisticated observability tasks:

  • Natural language query generation: Users ask questions like "What’s the request latency for my checkout service?" and the assistant automatically finds relevant metrics and constructs appropriate queries
  • Dashboard creation: Creates entire dashboards with multiple panels, selects visualizations, crafts titles and descriptions, and handles panel placement—tasks typically requiring significant time and expertise
  • Intelligent investigations: When prompted about service issues, navigates through logs and metrics, identifies errors, analyzes latency patterns, and provides root cause analysis with recommended actions
  • Multi-step automation: Breaks complex observability tasks into logical steps, showing reasoning and tool usage throughout

The assistant leverages specialized tools to query metrics, navigate between Grafana views, fix problematic panels, and adjust visual elements like color schemes across multiple panels simultaneously.

Claude is changing how Grafana customers interact with their observability data. The assistant eliminates traditional barriers between technical expertise and actionable insights, enabling teams at all levels to leverage data effectively.

"CTOs and CEOs can query their data like a seasoned SRE," Rochau observed. This democratization means strategic decision-makers can directly access insights without requiring specialized technical knowledge or spending hours analyzing data. Tasks like dashboard creation now happen in minutes through natural language conversations, letting teams focus on interpreting insights and taking action rather than wrestling with query syntax.

For customers, this represents a shift from reactive to proactive observability. Instead of manually investigating issues when they arise, teams receive intelligent analysis and recommendations that identify problems before they escalate.

Building the future of AI-enhanced observability

Grafana envisions AI transforming observability in profound ways. "AI will greatly shape the observability space," Rochau predicted. "The combination of humans and agents is powerful: Agents help sift through relevant incidents and data to give a cohesive map of the situation while you focus on delivering fixes."

Looking ahead, Grafana plans to explore Model Context Protocol integrations further, seeking deeper capabilities that provide customers more tools for solving observability challenges.
